Does your natural deodorant cause bumps under your armpit? Here's what nobody tells you

 bolitas en la axila

Many people switch to natural deodorants with the intention of taking better care of their bodies, but sometimes they end up with an unexpected side effect: bumps, lumps, or irritation in the armpits. If this has happened to you, you're not alone. And it doesn't mean your skin can't tolerate natural products, but rather that not all natural deodorants are well-formulated.

Here are the most common causes:

1. Comedogenic oils: such as coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the most commonly used ingredients in natural deodorants due to its firm texture and its reputation as an “antibacterial.” However, it is a highly comedogenic oil, meaning it easily clogs pores, especially in areas like the armpit where the skin is thin, sweat accumulates, and there is constant friction.

This can lead to:

  • Hard lumps under the skin (cysts or folliculitis)
  • Clogged sweat glands
  • Inflammation or ingrown hairs

Other oils that can also cause this effect in sensitive skin are shea butter and cocoa butter if not well-balanced.

2. Baking soda: too alkaline for your skin

Baking soda has been the star ingredient of many DIY deodorants and natural brands... but it is also one of the biggest causes of armpit irritation.

Its pH is extremely alkaline (pH ~9), while your skin's pH is slightly acidic (pH ~5). This imbalance can:

  • Irritate the skin barrier
  • Cause redness or burning
  • Trigger contact dermatitis

Although many people tolerate it at first, constant use can sensitize the skin over time.

3. Too many essential oils: more is not better

Some natural brands believe that the more “natural” a product, the better... and end up using high concentrations of essential oils. But these compounds, although natural, are highly potent and can cause reactions if used in excess:

  • Sensitivity or itching
  • Rash or burning sensation
  • Accumulative allergic reactions over time

Oils like cinnamon, tea tree, clove, or peppermint are particularly potent and should be used with great caution.

  • No coconut oil or comedogenic butters
  • No baking soda
  • With essential oils in safe concentrations
