Sandalore: the ingredient that stimulates hair growth from the olfactory receptors

When we think of hair care ingredients, we rarely imagine that the sense of smell could be involved. However, recent studies have shown that certain olfactory receptors—yes, the same ones we use to smell—are also present in the hair follicles of the scalp. One of the most promising compounds in this field is Sandalore, a synthetic sandalwood-like aroma that activates the OR2AT4 receptor in the scalp, promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss.

What is Sandalore and how does it work?

Sandalore® is an aromatic molecule originally created for its pleasant sandalwood scent. But beyond its function as a fragrance, it was discovered to stimulate the olfactory receptor OR2AT4, present in human hair follicles. When activated, this receptor induces the production of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor), which prolongs the hair growth phase (anagen) and reduces cell apoptosis (follicle cell death).

Clinical results: less hair loss, more volume

A double-blind clinical study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, showed that topical application of a 1% Sandalore solution for 24 weeks in women with telogen effluvium (hair loss due to stress or hormonal changes) significantly reduced hair loss, increased hair volume, and improved the ratio of terminal hairs vs. vellus hairs.

Positive effects began to be noticed at 8 weeks and were maintained until week 24, outperforming the placebo group. In addition, participants who used Sandalore reported greater overall satisfaction with the results.

Maxalli's Active Root Serum: sensory technology for your scalp

At Maxalli, we have incorporated Sandalore® into our Active Root Serum, a formula developed to strengthen the scalp and promote healthy hair growth without the need for medications or harsh ingredients.

In addition to Sandalore, the serum includes:

  • Rosemary essential oil, known for its stimulating effects
  • Dexpanthenol (provitamin B5), which soothes and regenerates the skin
  • Natural ferments, which balance the scalp's microbiome and reduce irritation

This serum is ideal for application in areas with thinning or loss of density, or as a preventive treatment for those who wish to maintain a strong, healthy, and good-smelling scalp.
