Coconut oil for cosmetics

Aceite de coco

Coconut oil is a product extracted from the pulp of the coconut (Cocos nucifera), a fruit widely cultivated in tropical regions such as the Pacific, Asia, and Latin America, including Mexico. This oil is known for its nourishing, medicinal, and cosmetic properties, as well as being a sustainable option in the food and personal care industry.

Mainly obtained through cold pressing, coconut oil contains a high concentration of saturated fatty acids, especially lauric acid, which gives it stability and a creamy texture at room temperature.

In cosmetics, coconut oil is used as a natural moisturizer, makeup remover, and hair treatment due to its ability to penetrate deeply into the skin and hair, providing nourishment and softness. At Maxalli, we use pure cold-pressed coconut oil and its caprylic/capric triglycerides in our natural deodorants and balms.

What is coconut oil made of?

Coconut oil is mainly composed of saturated fatty acids, especially lauric, myristic, and capric acids, which give it highly nourishing and moisturizing properties. In cosmetics, this oil is valued for its ability to soften the skin, restore the skin barrier, and combat extreme dryness. Additionally, it possesses natural antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from external aggressions and premature aging. Thanks to its light texture and rapid absorption, it is a key ingredient in creams, balms, masks, and hair products.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is the main ingredient in our natural deodorant and is a variant obtained by subjecting coconut oil to a process of separating its components. During this process, saturated fats that solidify at low temperatures are removed, leaving only medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which results in a liquid, light, and stable oil at any temperature.

This type of oil is highly valued in the cosmetic industry, as it does not clog pores and is quickly absorbed, making it ideal for massages, aromatherapy, and as a base for essential oils. It is also used in pharmaceutical products and nutritional supplements due to its purity and easy digestion.

Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides

Caprylic/capric triglycerides are a mixture of fatty acids derived from caprylic acid and capric acid, two types of medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs). These compounds are mainly obtained from coconut oil and palm oil through a process of fractionation and esterification. They are widely used in cosmetics and skincare due to their ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients, provide a light and silky texture, and offer emollient properties without a greasy feel.

Natural and Sustainable Ingredient in Mexico

In Mexico, coconut cultivation is concentrated in states such as Guerrero, Colima, and Tabasco. Coconut oil represents a source of income for rural communities, while its production contributes to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. With benefits ranging from health to beauty, coconut oil and its derivatives continue to gain popularity as natural and ecological alternatives.
